What is Public Health?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines public health as the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities. This work is achieved by promoting healthy lifestyles; researching disease and injury prevention; and detecting, preventing, and responding to infectious diseases.

Public Health Camp began in 2011 as a partnership effort between UTHealth School of Public Health San Antonio, UT Health San Antonio - Institute for Integration of Medicine & Science (IIMS), and South Central Area Health Education Center (AHEC) to introduce high school students to various public health professions and careers.

Our camp focuses on increasing the student's awareness of public health and the vast array of professions that work to achieve public health goals. There is a multitude of public health professions such as community health workers, epidemiologists, first responders, nutritionists, public policymakers, occupational health and safety professionals, sanitarians, and many more.

The week-long program includes leaders from across the city and state. Each session includes sharing of "why" and "how" they chose their career path. The students are introduced to local undergraduate programs (UTSA, St. Mary's University, Shriner University, etc.) in public health and medical professions such as nursing and dentistry.
